Our keynote speaker is Dr. Ken Smith, Corporate Scientist, 3M. Ken will share his perspectives on the 3M Way and delve into the culture of innovation that 3M is globally recognized for pioneering. Since 1987, Ken has worked in the development and commercialization of microreplicated Diamond Ken SmithGrade retroreflective products. Although this broad product family has been a constant focus over the years, the specific technologies and the resulting products have changed greatly, spanning the entire reflective products pyramid. More recently Ken, as part of the 3M Connected Roads effort, has worked to develop infrastructure materials which simultaneously serve both humans as well as connected and automated vehicles. Ken joined 3M in September 1982 after receiving BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. He is a named inventor on more than 100 patents.

Chris HartOur closing plenary session speaker, Christopher A. Hart, offers thought-provoking remarks relating to transportation’s role in creating a safe and livable communities. Chris is the founder of Hart Solutions LLP, which specializes in improving safety in a variety of contexts, including the safety of automation in motor vehicles, workplace safety, and process safety in potentially hazardous industries. Prior to founding Hart Solutions, Chris served as Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board from 2015 to February 2018. Chris has a law degree from Harvard Law School and a master’s Degree and a bachelor’s Degree (magna cum laude) in Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Lawyer- Pilots Bar Association, and he is a pilot with commercial, multi-engine, and instrument ratings.
